About Minneapolis
Attractions in Minneapolis
Gay Nineties
Gay Nineties has dancing, dining and drag shows that attract both a gay and straight clientele.
Walker Art Center
The first-class, recently expanded Walker Art Center has a strong permanent collection of 20th-century art and photography, including big-name US painters and great US pop art.
Gluek's
There's nothing like a hearty meal at Gluek's to see you through Minneapolis' frostier days. Pot roast, walleye, macaroni-and-cheese with spaetzle (similar to noodles) and other good meals have emerged from the Gluek's German kitchen since 1902. It even has its own beers on tap, which are the perfect accompaniment.
First Avenue & 7th St Entry
This place is the bedrock of Minneapolis' music scene - over 35 years old, and still pulling top bands and big crowds. From the Ramones and the Kinks in the 70s through to the Chemical Brothers and assorted DJs in the 90s, some illustrious names have graced its stage. But it's probably best known for its starring role in the Prince film Purple Rain.
Café Barbette
Intimate, Parisian-style Barbette welcomes with low booths and art-filled walls. It's good for wine, cheese and appetizers with friends, or for a romantic dinner with a date, but whatever you do, don't miss the warm chocolate cake.
St Paul Curling Club
Stop in and watch the action just across the Mississippi at the St Paul Curling Club. For those uninitiated in northern ways, curling is a winter sport that involves sliding a hubcab-sized 'puck' down the ice toward a bulls-eye. While you might not understand it at first, it's fun to see the 'pitcher' scream at the frantic ice brushers.
Brit's Pub
A lawn bowling green carpets Brit's roof, and the bar's sweeping selection of Scotch, ports and beer is sure to unleash skills in the sport you never knew you had.
Mall of America
What can you say about a mall housing more than 500 stores, 70 restaurants, 14 movie screens, a wedding chapel, an 18-hole mini-golf course, a gargantuan aquarium and a Camp Snoopy amusement park under one roof? For starters you could say it's the largest darn mall in America, an immense consumer-driven entertainment complex that simply boggles the mind.
Mickey's Dining Car
Mickey's is a downtown classic; a visit to Minneapolis would not be complete without a trip across the river to sample the other twin's hospitality. It's the kind of place where the waitress calls you 'honey' and regulars line the bar with their coffee cups and newspapers. The food is timeless Americana: burgers, malts and apple pie.
Fort Snelling State Park
Located at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, the historic Fort Snelling is the state's oldest structure. The fort was established in the early 19th century as a frontier outpost in the remote Northwest Territories. Now, guides in period dress show restored buildings and displays of frontier life.
Minnesota Zoo
Minnesota's excellent zoo has more than 2700 animals living in their 'natural' habitats. A highlight is the Discovery Bay aquarium centre, a maze of underground tunnels and walkways that bring you face-to-face with sharks and rays. The emphasis is, funnily enough, on cold-climate creatures.
